Free CDL training

Two routes can cost nothing up front: workforce money under WIOA, and a carrier that trains you in return for a work commitment. Of the 10 carrier programs we checked on October 5, 2026, 10 do not say on the page we read what you owe if you leave early.

Workforce boards (WIOA)

The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act sends federal money to local workforce boards. A board can pay tuition for a person who qualifies, at a school whose program is on the state's eligible training provider list. That list is the same Labor Department file behind the prices on this site: it holds 1,551 CDL programs with a usable price, with a median of $4,900.

To apply, go to an American Job Center near you and ask for WIOA training funds for a CDL program. Eligibility and the approved school list are set by your state and local board. Our cost page shows the posted prices by state.

Carrier-paid programs

A carrier-paid program covers your training in return for a commitment to drive for the company. What each carrier's own pages say:

Questions people ask

Can I get CDL training for free?

Two routes can cost nothing up front. A workforce board can pay tuition under WIOA at a school on your state's approved training list if you qualify, and a carrier can train you for free if you agree to drive for it. Neither is free of strings, so read what you sign.

What happens if I leave a carrier early?

It depends on the contract. Of the 10 carrier programs we track, 10 do not publish what you owe if you leave early on the page we checked. Ask for the signed agreement and the payoff amount before you start.

How do I apply for WIOA training money?

Go to an American Job Center in your area and ask for WIOA training funds for a CDL program. The board decides eligibility, and it pays only for programs on the state's approved list.

Do I still need a school on the FMCSA registry?

Yes. Since February 2022 the CDL skills test requires entry-level driver training from a provider on FMCSA's registry, including carrier academies that are registered.
